How to select the right sized batteries

Well, your choices and problem are narrowed down considerably if you know the right-sized batteries needed for the inverter. You can do this by finding the largest and most constant AC load you plan for the inverter to run. This, in most houses, is the microwave.

You now have to divide the constant AC load by 5. This gives a rough idea of the battery capacity required to sustain loads, that’s 20% of your load. Now take a microwave, for example.

It draws about 1000 watts AC, so this means that 20% of it is about 200. This means that the microwave needs industrial power inverters with 200 amp power batteries.

How to select the right-sized inverter

You similarly have to determine the right-sized inverter for yourself. This is not because there are so many brands and inverter manufacturers rating their inverter power at different temperature ratings.

This is because an inverter’s power output reduces a lot with the rise in internal heat. While inverters have about 5, 10 and 30-minute ratings, they do not remove heat quickly enough and this leads to rapid drop in the output power levels.

Most industrial power inverters supply full output at power up to 25°C and start de-rating the output power from here.

Keeping this in mind, you basally have to add the AC loads of all appliances you plan to use through the inverter. You also have to determine if you plan to use all the appliances at once, or individually. If you are using them all at once, you need a bigger inverter to compensate, and to cover peak surge leads in inverters.
